Below is a tasting menu of my most recent stuff. And if you'd like to see more please do check out the vault.

And don't hesitate to drop me an email if you've any questions or there's a project you think I could help out with.

ABOUT ME

I started writing journalism on student rags during my time reading P.P.E. at Oxford University, and then at Cardiff University studying for an M.A. in Magazine Journalism. But I began my professional writing life in the commercial world as a Social Sciences Copywriter at Oxford University Press. Subsequently, I landed a job as Junior Writer on Empire Magazine, ascending to the dizzying heights of Features Editor, before departing the world of over-caffeinated (ahem) L.A. publicists for the calmer waters of freelance writing.

Since then I've continued to write regularly for Empire – the world's best-selling movie magazine – as a senior contributing editor. I've also written for dozens of other titles as well as broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 4's arts flagship Front Row (you can have a listen here), acting as a principal reviewer for Radio Times, and writing a book on the best movies of the 21st century (with another forthcoming). I also regularly talk to students at the National Film & Television School about movies and media.

I'm as at home with a 400-word native ad as a 4,000-word research feature and have interviewed talent as diverse as James Cameron, Russell Crowe, Ridley Scott, Kevin Spacey and Emily Ratajkowski without getting thrown out. Yet.

In my downtime I take pictures (creative!), play video games (sad!) and explain to anyone present, and at length, why Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America is a better film that The Godfather (true!).

Do drop me an email if there's something you think we might be able to work on together.

THE REVIEWS

"Adam Smith, much as he’d probably hate me saying it, is why I got into journalism in the first place. As an avid reader, his were the features in Empire I always turned to first. Later, I was lucky enough to be taught by him and then to work with him, on Empire and a number of other brands, across many genres. Now I just make a point of commissioning him as often as I can, and recommending him without hesitation to any other editors in my business. His copy is as smart, funny and insightful as it always was.”

Mark Dinning, Editorial Director, Time Out Group, Middle East

"I always commission Adam when I want a film expert. He has the breadth of knowledge to write anything I throw at him with authority and speed. He also has a rare understanding of commercial content – which is like doing everything a journalist does, but backwards and in high heels."

Simon Lewis, Commercial Editor, DailyTelegraph

“Adam is an absolutely top-notch writer – his depth of knowledge is second to none, his research and interviewing abilities unparalleled. But as important for Empire: he’s consistently able to tell a story in a way that's both fascinatingly detailed and rollickingly entertaining.”

Nick de Semlyen, Editor, Empire Magazine

Book!

So, I wrote this book. The Rough Guide To 21st Century Cinema (Rough Guides/Penguin) is a pacy jaunt through the best movies the millennium has to offer so far taking in flicks as diverse as Avatar, Donnie Darko, Ichi The killer and Enter The Void. "A vivid picture of the state of the art during one of the most exciting periods in film history," says the burb. Sounds good.
